CT19 are working with a world-leading, life science innovator -committed to developing & promoting advanced life science tools for future healthcare. Based on its proprietary technology, our client focuses on R&D, production & sales of DNA sequencing instruments, reagents, & related products. The business is a leading producer of clinical high-throughput gene sequencers, and its multi-omics platforms include genetic sequencing, medical imaging, & laboratory automation.
Role: R&D Lab Automation Engineer – Genomics
Location: Berlin, Germany (on-site)

About the role:

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify laboratory processes that can be automated. Design & develop innovative solutions using robotics, instrumentation, & software to automate tasks such as sample handling, data acquisition, & analysis.
  • Assist in the development & implementing software programs & scripts to control automated systems & integrate them with existing laboratory instruments & software platforms. Ensure seamless communication & data transfer between different components of the automation system.
  • Build functional prototypes of automated systems, including designing mechanical components & selecting appropriate hardware & software. Conduct rigorous testing & validation to ensure the accuracy, reliability, & safety of the automated processes.
  • Collaborate with scientists & laboratory personnel to understand their needs & challenges. Identify areas where automation can improve efficiency, accuracy, & reproducibility. Optimize & fine-tune automated processes to meet specific requirements & performance goals.
  • Maintain accurate & up-to-date documentation of the development process, including system specifications, design changes, & validation results. Prepare comprehensive reports & present findings to stakeholders & management teams.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Master’s or higher degree in a relevant engineering discipline (e.g., Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field).
  • Experience in the design & development of laboratory automation systems, including robotics/mechatronics & instrumentation.
  • Knowledge on programming languages such as Python, C++, or LabVIEW
  • Familiarity with automation platforms & frameworks, such as liquid handling systems, plate readers, or laboratory information management systems (LIMS).
  • Solid understanding of NGS laboratory processes & workflows, including experience with laboratory techniques & instruments commonly used in scientific research.
  • Knowledge of data analysis & statistical methods for evaluating automated processes. Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyse complex challenges & develop innovative solutions.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams & present technical information to non-technical stakeholders.
