Senior Optical Engineer – Germany
About the Role
We’re seeking a Senior Optical Engineer to join a leading quantum computing company in Germany. If you’re passionate about precision optics, laser systems, and cutting-edge technology, this is your chance to design, build, and maintain the optical systems that drive next-generation quantum hardware.
What You’ll Do
-
Collaborate & Build: Work closely with engineering teams to design, assemble, and align complex free-space and fiber-based optical systems.
-
Optimize Designs: Analyze optical setups and make recommendations to balance performance, tolerance, and manufacturability.
-
Innovate Components: Contribute to the development of custom optical components and integrated optomechanical systems.
-
Engineer Systems: Design optomechanical assemblies with focus on alignment, stability, and modularity.
-
Automate & Monitor: Support automation and monitoring of optical subsystems for smooth, continuous operation.
-
Troubleshoot & Diagnose: Solve complex optical challenges and help develop diagnostic tools.
-
Document & Share: Maintain optical design documentation, alignment procedures, and test protocols; participate in design reviews and continuous improvement.
What We’re Looking For
-
Master’s or PhD in Optical Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
-
5–8 years of industry experience in optical and optomechanical system design.
-
Hands-on experience with optical assembly in research or industrial environments.
-
Proficiency with CAD tools such as Zemax and SolidWorks.
-
Deep knowledge of optical components: modulators, lasers, high numerical aperture systems. Bonus points for optical resonators or microscopy experience.
-
Comfortable moving from concept to prototype — you enjoy building, testing, iterating.
-
Passionate about optics — you get excited by clever setups and fine-tuning systems until they’re perfect.
