Intro to PACT
PACT is revolutionising materials with creativity and purpose. Their flagship innovation, Oval, is a sophisticated biobased material made from abundant collagen—the same protein behind beauty breakthroughs. Combining unmatched quality with eco-conscious design, Oval sets a new standard for high-performance and scalable bio-based materials.
Collaborating with the world’s leading luxury brands, PACT crafts beautiful products that align with their creativity, quality, and profitability needs. Powered by their patented technology, they’re transforming bio-based raw materials into a multi-billion-dollar opportunity, creating elegant circular materials with a fraction of the environmental impact.
About the role
As a Scientist at PACT, you will contribute to the development, characterisation, and scale-up of next-generation sustainable materials. You will collaborate with senior scientists and engineers to support R&D and manufacturing activities. You will have on-the-job learning opportunities to develop expertise in different areas of biobased materials development including formulation, mixing, casting, lamination and finishing. This is a great opportunity for a skilled early-career scientist with a passion for sustainability and material innovation.
Core Responsibilities
- Support R&D efforts in the development of new product formulations entering the development pipeline by conducting routine and complex laboratory experiments.
- Assist in scale-up activities from bench-top to pilot manufacturing by collaborating closely within the product development team for formulation, scale-up and manufacturing scoping and development.
- Collect, analyze and interpret experimental data and prepare technical reports and presentation
- Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, ensuring high data quality.
- Perform material testing and characterisation to evaluate product performance.
- Work collaboratively across R&D, product, and engineering teams to meet project goals.
- Adhere to lab safety and regulatory standards.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (2:1 or 1st Class degree) in a relevant scientific discipline (e.g., Chemistry, Textiles or Leather Science, Material Science, Polymer Science)
- Familiarity with lab-scale processes for making and testing formulations / materials, particularly those that are biobased.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively across multi-disciplinary teams.
- Work independently to manage timelines and deliver results, while being an effective team
- contributor.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Aptitude with electronic word processing, spreadsheet and presentation systems, as well as comfort in using electronic systems and databases.
- Excellent organisation, data analysis, and communication skills.
- It is highly desirable if you have expertise in one or more of the following areas:
- 2+ years of industry or research experience in materials science or related field.
- Experience in the functionalization and/or processing of biobased polymers to improve the properties of the finished material
- Experience in the creation and/or characterization of CASE (coatings, adhesives, sealants and elastomers) materials
- Hands on experience of analytical techniques for materials / formulation characterization
- Experience with design of experiment (Doe) and/or statistical analysis tools
- Understanding of polymers, biomaterials, or textile-related production
- The successful candidate must, by the start of the employment, have permission to work in the UK. (PACT is a licensed sponsor for Skilled Worker Visa).
