We are looking for an experienced and dependable Head of People to support Nuclera’s growth in the next phase. Nuclera is a venture-based, founder-driven biotech company based in the Cambridge Science Park. The company is developing a breakthrough protein printing technology that accelerates the drug discovery process. Operating in both the UK and the USA, Nuclera is entering the next phase of growth and will commercialise its first product – a desktop bioprinter capable of printing proteins overnight, in 2022.
The main responsibility of this role is to ensure that all human resources (HR) operations are carried on smoothly and effectively. You will be responsible for developing HR strategies and providing sound advice to senior management on all related subjects. A Head of People must be an experienced professional with deep knowledge of all matters concerning HR in both the UK and the USA. You should be able to manage programs and lead staff while also possessing a strong strategic mindset. The goal is to ensure that all HR needs of the company are being met and are aligned with all business objectives.
You need to be self-motivated and can lead and act with little guidance. From a high level, you will:

  • Develop a 3-5 year strategic people agenda and vision with appropriate strategies to deliver on that vision moving forward
  • Develop corporate plans for a variety of People matters such as compensation, benefits, health and safety etc across UK and USA
  • Be the ambassador of Nuclera’s culture
  • Act to support the human factor in the company by implementing performance evaluation, staffing, training and development etc.
  • Oversee all HR initiatives, systems and tactics
  • Lead on organizational performance development and cultivate a high-performance culture that enables employees to perform in accordance with strategic business objectives

Often time, you will:

  • Supervise the work of HR personnel and provide guidance
  • Monitor adherence to internal policies and legal standards
  • Deal with grievances and violations invoking disciplinary action when required
  • Anticipate and resolve litigation risks
  • Report to senior management by analyzing data and using HR metrics
  • Ensure our recordkeeping and data processing procedures comply with GDPR requirements
  • Coordinate employee training and development initiatives
  • Measure the effectiveness of our benefits programs and recommend improvements
  • Manage internal communication projects (like job satisfaction surveys)
  • Track key HR metrics like cost per hire and retention rates
  • Review and update our employment contracts and agreements
  • Design company policies and procedures


  • HR professional with a proven track record of success in establishing and managing an HR function in a high-growth start-up and with experience of scaling up an HR department and building and leading teams.
  • Thorough knowledge of relevant employment law and regulations primarily in the UK, but should also be familiar with US regulations.
  • Proven experience as HR Director, Head of People, or equivalent
  • Excellent knowledge of employment legislation and regulations
  • Thorough knowledge of human resource management principles and best practices
  • Excellent organizational and leadership skills
  • Knowledge of data analysis and reporting
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience in designing compensation and benefits programs
