Senior Product Design Engineer

CT19

We are looking for an experienced Product Design Engineer with electromechanical design background to join our Desktop Bioprinter development efforts. At Nuclera, fast-growing and multidisciplinary teams across engineering, digital microfluidics, and biology collaborate to develop new desktop instruments to revolutionise gene and protein synthesis. As part of the Platform Development Group, the successful candidate will enable the design, prototyping, testing, optimisation and scalability of new instruments and the associated sub-systems related to our novel synthesis platform that has digital microfluidics at its core.
This role represents a great opportunity for candidates with drive and experience to help shape the emerging Platform Development Group in the exciting field of biotechnology research instrument development. We are seeking candidates with excellent design capabilities, with practical understanding of electromechanical design for scalability with innovative approach to product development challenges.

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Providing engineering designs for the development of electromechanical, optomechanical and fluidic sub-systems
  • Establishing and evolving engineering documentation and practices in our product data management system
  • Taking ownership of development efforts at the sub-system level and effectively communicating technical details with other functions
  • Sourcing commercially off the shelf components, utilising in-house fabrication capacity and working with external vendors for custom designed parts
  • Constructing, testing and improving designs by embracing sound experimental methods and taking a hands-on approach in the laboratory and workshop
  • Developing manufacturing baseline documents such as part and assembly drawings, work instructions and test instructions
  • Interacting effectively with other team members to understand and solve the engineering problems that arise

Requirements
Required qualifications and skills:

  • Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics or Machine Design at Bachelor or the equivalent
  • At least 7 years of design and development experience using CAD packages, preferably SolidWorks, with demonstrable results
  • Extensive experience in leading design of mechanisms involving electromechanical function in high tech applications such as precision instrumentation for the life sciences
  • Demonstrate ability to lead full cycle development (design, prototyping, testing and validation) with strong documentation practices
  • First-hand knowledge of design for manufacturing and assembly with knowledge of manufacturing baseline transfer
  • Demonstrate ability to work with internal production or external vendors, and preferably CMO
  • Attention to details, take pride in quality, and ability to deliver iteratively in an agile manner
  • Demonstrate strong motivation and a ‘can do’ attitude with flexibility to adapt to the needs of the development team

Desirable qualifications and skills:

  • Experience of full-cycle product development within multi-disciplinary teams
  • Experience in complex system development with motion control, fluidic (ideally microfluidics) and/or imaging functions
  • Experience of design, development and assessment for regulatory documentations e.g. CE, EMC and CB
  • Practical understanding of designing custom parts for manufacturing techniques at low and high volume, especially injection moulding of consumable parts, CNC milling, and plastic / sheet metal enclosures
  • Extensive experience with Solidworks PDM, ERP and PLM systems
  • Hands-on prototyping experience (e.g. electro-mechanical assembly, milling, 3D printing, etc.)
  • Working knowledge of biology, with the ability and desire to work alongside biologists and biochemists
  • Hands-on system engineering experience, programming and microcontroller background, e.g., using Python, a plus
  • Working experience in an ISO13485 QMS environment
  • Right to work in the UK without the need for visa sponsor

Benefits
In addition to competitive salaries, we offer a range of benefits for all of our colleagues, including:
