Senior Optical Systems Engineer

Senior Optical Systems Engineer

CT19

Description
We are looking for an experienced Optical Systems Engineer to join our exciting journey into Desktop Bioprinter development. At Nuclera, multidisciplinary team of experts across engineering, microfluidics, and biology collaborate to develop new desktop instruments to revolutionize gene and protein synthesis. The successful candidate will enable the development, testing, and optimization of optical and imaging sub-system related to our novel synthesis platform that has digital microfluidics at its core.
This role represents a great opportunity for candidates in helping to shape the growing Platform Development team in the exciting field of biotechnology research instrument development. We are seeking candidates with an excellent mindset for optical system design, with practical understanding of prototype development, and strong testing experience to support our product development.
If successful you will:

  • Design and develop optical and imaging sub-systems
  • Provide design support to develop optomechanical and imaging systems
  • Select, source and integrate commercially-off-the-shelf optical components for prototype development
  • Generate test protocols and design documentation for our product data management system
  • Utilise in-house fabrication capabilities and external vendors for development of custom designed parts
  • Construct, test and improve designs, by embracing sound experimental methods and taking a hands-on approach in the laboratory and workshop
  • Show attention to details, take pride in quality, and deliver iteratively in an agile manner
  • Interact effectively with other team members to understand and solve the engineering and multi-phyisics problems that arise

Requirements
Required qualifications and skills:

  • Bachelor or Master degree in Physics or a relevant Science and Engineering discipline with experience working with optics systems
  • At least 5 years of R&D experience in the field of instrument development
  • Extensive knowledge of geometrical optics, optical systems and characterisation technologies
  • Experience in the design and development of optical detection systems for integration into analytical instrumentation, fluorescent-based detection systems and characterisation platforms
  • Extensive experience in selecting commercially available optical components and design of custom filters and lenses
  • Optical sub-system modelling experience, preferably Zemax OpticStudio or other optical design tools
  • Extensive experience in testing, characterisation and optimisation of optical system and analytical instrumentation
  • Demonstrate ability to support product development (design, prototyping, testing and validation) with strong documentation practices
  • Demonstrate a ‘can do’ attitude with flexibility to adapt to the needs of the development team

Desirable qualifications and skills:

  • PhD or post-graduate experience in optical system development, especially microscopy for life science in industry or academia
  • Experience as a user of microscopy and analytical system for research, or working closely with researchers using such systems
  • Experience in multi-physicist simulation tools such as COMSOL
  • Familiarity with mechanical design using CAD packages (preferably SolidWorks), ideally for manufacturing and new product introduction
  • Experience with programming languages such as Python and working with image processing libraries such as OpenCV
  • Experience in use of microscopy (ideally fluorescence imaging), image processing and quantification techniques
  • Right to work in the UK without the need for visa sponsor

Benefits
In addition to competitive salaries, we offer a range of benefits for all of our colleagues, including:

  • Private medical insurance and cash plan
  • Life assurance of 4x annual salary
  • 25 days’ annual leave
  • EMI-approved option scheme
  • Enhanced employer’s Pension Contributions
  • Enhanced maternity and paternity Leave
  • Investment in professional development and learning
  • Access to amenities from the Cambridge Science Park
  • Fresh fruit, tea, coffee and snacks in the office
  • Monthly celebratory cakes and treats
  • Organised summer events for staff and their families
