Senior Manufacturing Engineer


We are looking for an experienced manufacturing engineer with a mechanical engineering background to join our Desktop Bioprinter manufacturing and scalability efforts. At Nuclera, fast-growing and multidisciplinary teams across engineering, digital microfluidics, and biology collaborate to develop new desktop instruments to revolutionise gene and protein synthesis. As part of the Platform Development Group, the successful candidate will enable the development, testing, optimisation and scalability of instruments and the associated cartridges related to our novel synthesis platform that has digital microfluidics at its core.
This role represents a great opportunity for candidates with drive and experience in helping to shape the emerging Platform Group in the exciting field of biotechnology research instrumentation. We are seeking candidates with excellent manufacturing and production engineering capabilities, with practical understanding of electro-mechanical design and documentation for scalability.
Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Contributing to mechanical design, prototyping, testing and de-bugging in the development of electromechanical, optomechanical and fluidic sub-systems
  • Design and development of jigs and fixtures, test rigs and calibration protocols for sub-systems and our instrument
  • Developing manufacturing baseline documents such as part and assembly drawings, work instructions and test instructions for sub-systems and final acceptance testing of the instrument
  • Maintenance and change management of design and manufacturing documentation in our product data management system
  • Developing manufacturing strategies for development iterations and pilot production of Nuclera’s platform products (both instrument and single use cartridges)
  • Supply chain management including sourcing of commercially off the shelf components, utilising in-house fabrication capacity and working with external vendors for custom designed parts
  • Effectively communicating technical details with other functions in prototyping, testing and design improvement by embracing sound experimental methods and taking a hands-on approach in the laboratory and workshop
  • Interacting effectively with other team members to understand and solve the engineering problems that arise

Required qualifications and skills:

  • Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering at Bachelor or the equivalent
  • At least 7 years of mechanical and manufacturing engineering experience using CAD packages, preferably SolidWorks
  • At least 5 years of working with PDM, PLM and ERP systems
  • Extensive experience in leading design and process improvement efforts for assembly and scale-up, preferably with systems involving electromechanical function in high tech applications
  • Familiarity with staging dFMEA and pFMEA documentation, SOP writing, risk assessment and developing DHF
  • Demonstrate ability to lead staging of pilot production and scale-up with strong documentation practices
  • First-hand knowledge of design for various manufacturing processes and assembly documentation with knowledge of manufacturing baseline transfer
  • Demonstrate ability to work with internal production or external vendors, and preferably CMOs
  • Attention to details, take pride in quality, and ability to deliver iteratively in an agile manner
  • Demonstrate strong motivation and a ‘can do’ attitude with flexibility to adapt to the needs of the development team

Desirable qualifications and skills:

  • Experience of pilot production setup, validation and scale up of scientific instrumentation and single use cartridges, ideally in cleanroom environment
  • Experience in engineering development of complex systems with motion control, opto-mechanical, thermo-mechanical and fluidic elements – ideally in the fields of microfluidics and/or life sciences
  • Experience of documentation assessment for regulatory documentations e.g. CE
  • Engineering change management experience, ideally in an ISO13485 QMS environment
  • Practical understanding of manufacturing techniques at low and high volume, especially injection moulding of consumable parts, CNC milling, and plastic / sheet metal enclosures
  • Hands-on prototyping experience (e.g. electro-mechanical assembly, milling, 3D printing, etc.)
  • Ability to provide mentorship to junior members of the team, and project management in an agile framework
  • Right to work in the UK without the need for visa sponsor
