Senior Electronics Design Engineer


We are looking for an experienced Electronics Design Engineer to join our exciting journey into synthesis biology platform development. At Nuclera, fast-growing and multidisciplinary teams of engineering, microfluidics, protein synthesis, DNA synthesis and biochemistry collaborate to develop new desktop instruments to revolutionize gene and protein synthesis. As part of platform development team, the successful candidate will enable the design, prototyping, testing, optimisation and scalability of new instruments and the associated sub-systems related to our novel synthesis platform that has digital microfluidics at its core.
This role represents a great opportunity for candidates in helping to shape the growing Platform Development team in the exciting field of biotechnology research instrumentation. We are seeking candidates with excellent design capabilities, with practical understanding of electronics design for scalability.
Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • providing innovative ideas and improving current electronics designs in the development of electro-mechanical, opto-mechanical and fluidic sub-systems in the platform development team
  • developing engineering and design documentation and practices in our product data management system
  • performing electrical safety and regulatory related testing and design improvements or liaising with test houses for such assessments
  • taking ownership of development efforts at sub-system level with effective technical communication with other functions
  • sourcing of commercially off the shelf components and utilising both in-house fabrication capacity and external vendors for custom designed parts
  • constructing, testing and improving those designs, by embracing sound experimental methods and hands-on approach in the laboratory and workshop
  • developing manufacturing baseline documents such as part and assembly drawing, work instruction and test instruction
  • attention to details, take pride in quality, and ability to deliver iteratively in an agile manner
  • communicating and liaising external suppliers, manufacturers and test houses
  • interacting effectively with other team members to understand and solve the engineering problems that arise

Required qualifications and skills:

  • Electronics Engineering degree with strong track record
  • At least 8 years of design and development experience on electronics control and embedded systems with demonstrable results
  • Extensive experience in leading design of embedded systems for mechanisms involving electromechanical sensing and actuation in high tech application such as precision instrumentation in life science application
  • Proven track record of electronics circuit design (analogue/digital), PCB design & schematic capture experience – Altium or similar
  • Experience with a variety of microcontrollers, microprocessors and network interfaces
  • Demonstrate ability to lead full cycle development (design, prototyping, testing and validation) with strong documentation and source control practices
  • Experience of design, development and assessment for regulatory documentations e.g. CE, EMC and CB
  • Demonstrate ability to work with internal production or external vendors, and preferably CMO
  • Demonstrate a ‘can do’ attitude with drive and flexibility to adapt to the high pace and needs of the development team
  • Right to work in the UK without the need for visa sponsor

Desirable qualifications and skills:

  • PhD or equivalent experience
  • Embedded software development experience with low level languages, e.g. C, C++
  • Working experience with documentation and change management under ISO13485 QMS system a desirable attribute
  • Ability to understand, motivate and drive the development team to execute project priorities with agile project management
  • Hands-on experience with prototyping parts, assemblies and rigs, and documentation of test instructions
  • Practical experience in generation of IP leading to commercialisation
  • Experience with mechanical CAD packages, product data management and revision control
  • Experience in development of multi-physics systems such as electromagnetic, optoelectronic, thermomechanical and fluidics systems
