The world needs to rapidly increase battery cell production to enable a faster transition to zero emission Technologies.  By being amongst the first to produce silicon material for battery cells, we can reduce the size of this challenge – putting a net zero future within closer reach for multiple industries. Today, Nexeon is home to two of the most exciting silicon anode materials.  As we transition away from research and into product development, a new way of working must be adopted; one that prioritizes customers and their requirements. Combined with the recent investment from energy and chemical giant SKC, it is a very exciting time for the company and one filled with enormous opportunity, but it will only be realized if we strengthen and add to our incredible team of world class experts in order to deliver our ambitions plans!
 
The Role:
 

  • Conduct tests and experiments using different analytical techniques existing at Nexeon and develop new and/or improved characterization techniques relevant to the business needs;
  • Reporting of QC data, use of digital databases (IDBS) and statistical analysing methods;
  • Guide methods’ development activities and MSAs for the identification, validation and monitoring of instrument tolerance, calibration, reproducibility using internal samples and commercial standards as per SOPs;
  • Use relevant and robust material characterisation methods to further improve practical understanding of how materials processing, structure and properties correlate with customer targets & cell performance;
  • Support R&D and Production teams to enhance fundamental understanding of how the process parameters of the scaled synthesis routes used for NSP2 impact on the resulting structured silicon anode material products through identification, prioritisation and investigation of clear scientific hypotheses;
  • Execute adequate pre-experiment review before laboratory work is begun (e.g. COSHH and risk assessments). Apply enforcement as required;
  • Working in compliance with Nexeon’s policies and ISO9001 and ISO14001.

What we are looking for:
 

  • PhD (Analytical Science) or equivalent experience in an industrial environment
  • Broad, detailed & practical knowledge of multiple material characterisation techniques;
  • Demonstrated technical capability of developing new/novel materials-related characterisation methods;
  • Use of statistical methods and tools to ensure robustness of data and consistency;
  • Able to independently analyse a range of materials characterisation data and form initial interpretation;
  • Can show evidence of having performed method development on LECO, TGA, BET SA, PSD, Tapped and True densities, SEM-EDX, mass spec;
  • Capability to motivate and train junior colleagues;
  • Conscientious and meticulous in laboratory and written work;
  • Good oral and written communication skills to colleagues and a wider audience;
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision and as part of a team;
  • Good time management skills and ability to work to tight deadlines and take a proactive approach to problem solving;
  • Ability to effectively prioritise and organise multiple characterisation work streams;
  • Demonstrable ability to work independently, influence others and lead a project or team;
  • Strong organisational and excellent interpersonal communication skills;
  • Demonstrable ability to work in multi-disciplinary, multi-cultural teams;
  • Demonstrated excellence in technical writing skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to work to high standards of quality and safety;
  • A sound approach to health, safety and environmental aspects in the laboratory.

 
Essential Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years recent and relevant industrial experience ideally in a material, chemical or pharmaceutical development environment taking things to completion and working for commercial gains
  • Preferably experience in developing materials characterization in lithium-ion battery, semiconductor or electronics industries
  • Experience of taking ideas quickly and rigorously from concept stage to implementation
  • Can give examples of personal creativity, innovation and problem solving
  • Driven, focused, impatient for success: experience designing and analysing rigorous, rapid evaluation trials and studies (e.g. DOE designed experimentation), under non-disclosure terms
