Seeking a Materials Chemist / Polymer Scientist to join a rapidly expanding, financially backed, sustainability focused lab-grown meat company based in Oxford. If you want the opportunity to join a company that are going to change the world in the next 3 years then read on.
We are looking for a materials chemist to join our Bioengineering team, who specialise in technology and biomaterial development. This is a lab-based role and your work will centre on optimising biomaterial performance and exploring new areas of IP. Training will be provided for all aspects but hands-on experience in chemical synthesis is expected and knowledge/experience in polymers is desirable.

Location: Oxford
PhD in chemistry/biomaterials or related field, including polymers, hydrogels and materials engineering.
OR Bachelors/Masters in a relevant field with 2 years industry experience with biomaterials.
In the Bioengineering Team, you will be tasked with helping develop and scale the manufacture new biomaterials. As a Scientist joining the team you will perform the following duties:

  • Design, develop and troubleshoot assays, chemistry, and methods for monitoring interactions between molecules/biomolecules/cells and biomaterials.
  • Develop and implement methods for the characterisation of biomaterials.
  • Produce R&D project plans and carry out relevant lab experiments.
  • Work alongside the industrialisation team to identify how to scale up processes
  • Generate SOP’s, COSHH & RA documentation for your work
  • Create succinct reports for the team and present at wider company R&D meetings
  • Document experiments using electronic laboratory notebook system

Essential Experience:

  • Design, synthesis, and characterisation of materials for biological applications
  • Formulating and processing natural polymers (e.g. polysaccharides, proteins, lipids), hydrogels and/or protein/enzyme solutions.
  • Chemical/mechanical characterisation of materials (e.g. GPC/SEC-HPLC, NMR, FTIR, TGA/DSC, tensile testing).
  • Experienced in chemical synthesis and characterisation with an understanding of chemical hazards and safety protocols.
  • Good knowledge of standard chemical methods in purification, isolation and work-up of small molecules (solvents, reagents etc).

Desirable Experience:

  • 2+ years in industry/academia
  • Experience working with biomaterials or academic understanding of cell-material interfaces.
  • Knowledge of material processing methodologies (e.g. 3D printing, extrusion, microfluidics, roll-to-roll/gravure coating)
  • Scaling lab-based methods from g to kg.
  • Prior experience with working in a clean room, biological safety cabinet or aseptic handling/sterilisation methods.
  • Basic understanding of patents and IP.
  • Critical assessment of research articles
  • Data processing and statistical analysis
