Mechanical Engineer


The Mechanical Engineer will join the Engineering Department at Nuclera, interfacing with a rapidly growing team that combines experts in biochemistry, synthetic biology and engineering to develop a new desktop bioprinter to revolutionize and democratize gene and protein synthesis. The successful candidate will enable the design, building, testing, optimization and fabrication of new instruments and the associated sub-systems related to our novel synthesis platform that has microfluidics at its core.
The role represents a great opportunity to help shape this emerging R+D team and to be involved in the exciting field of biotechnology research instrument development.
Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • providing clever mechanical engineering designs in the development of sub-systems in the instrument development team
  • sourcing of commercially off the shelf components and utilising both in-house workshop fabrication capacity and external vendors for custom designed parts
  • effective technical communication with other functions (microfluidics, electronics, optics and application engineering)
  • constructing, testing and improving those designs, by embracing sound experimental methods and hands-on approach in the laboratory and workshop
  • developing manufacturing baseline documents such as part and assembly drawing, work instruction and test instruction
  • attention to details, take pride in quality, and ability to deliver iteratively in an agile manner
  • interacting effectively with other team members to understand and solve the engineering problems that arise

Required qualifications and skills:

  • Mechanical engineering degree or the equivalent
  • At least 2 years’ of development experience using CAD packages, preferably Solidworks, with demonstrable results
  • Experience in design of custom components and mechanisms involving electromechanical function
  • Demonstrate ability to perform testing and validation of prototyped systems
  • First-hand knowledge of design for manufacturing and assembly with knowledge of manufacturing baseline transfer
  • Demonstrate ability to work with internal production or external vendors, and preferably CMO
  • Demonstrate a ‘can do’ attitude with flexibility to adapt to the needs of the development team

Desirable qualifications and skills:

  • Hands-on prototyping experience (e.g. milling, laser cutting, 3D printing etc.) with demonstrable results
  • Experience in system development with fluidic (ideally microfluidics) and optical/imaging functions
  • Microfabrication experience and programming and microcontroller background, e.g., using Python, a plus
  • Experience of working in projects with tight timelines and ideally managed through agile frameworks
  • Working experience in an ISO13485 QMS environment a desirable attribute.
  • Some practical knowledge of biology is a bonus, with the ability and desire to work alongside biologists and biochemists
  • Ability to work unsupervised and with a minimal level of engineering infrastructure
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative mentality
  • Good level of manual dexterity
